“You are biased, Where is the Law.” Nnamdi Kanu Blasts Judge

In a dramatic and chaotic scene, the highly anticipated judgment in the trial of Nnamdi Kanu was preceded by a major disruption that led to the defendant’s forcible removal from the courtroom.

The incident unfolded as Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), directly challenged the authority and impartiality of the presiding judge.

The tension erupted when Kanu, seemingly frustrated with the proceedings, stood to address the court.

He launched into a vehement protest, accusing Justice James Omotosho of judicial bias and a fundamental ignorance of the law. His voice rising, Kanu demanded, “Show me the law. Where’s the law?”- a rhetorical challenge that echoed through the courtroom.

The confrontation quickly escalated, compelling security operatives to intervene, physically escorting the defiant leader out to restore order.

A Trial Steeped in Controversy

This outburst was the culmination of a legal strategy Kanu has maintained for weeks. During previous hearings, he had insisted he would not mount a defence under what he termed a “replaced” law, leading the court to formally foreclose his right to do so on November 7th. Justice Omotosho had ruled that Kanu, having been given ample opportunity, had voluntarily waived his right to a defence and could not later claim a denial of fair hearing.

Despite the theatrical and contentious disruption, the court’s schedule remained unshaken. After Kanu was removed and order was restored, the proceedings continued unabated. The judiciary demonstrated its determination to proceed, with Justice Omotosho moving forward to deliver the landmark judgment on the terrorism charges, ensuring that the legal process reached its conclusion irrespective of the defendant’s protest.
