Workers Trapped as Three-Storey Building Collapses in Lagos

A three-storey building under construction at 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, crumbled on Friday night, leaving several workers feared trapped beneath the debris.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday via its official X account, revealing that four adult males had been rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment.

Eyewitness reports varied, with some claiming five to six individuals were still buried under the rubble. Emergency teams from NEMA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Fire and Rescue Service, and other responders swiftly arrived at the scene and launched search and rescue operations.

The exact number of those trapped remains uncertain, but rescue efforts continued through the night. Authorities have cordoned off the area to ensure safety and facilitate smooth operations.

This collapse adds to the growing list of structural failures in Lagos and across Nigeria, often attributed to poor construction standards, substandard materials, and weak regulatory oversight. According to government and civil society data, dozens of such incidents occur annually, leading to loss of life, injuries, and displacement.
