WASSCE 2025: Pass Rate Slumps to 38% As Female Candidates Lead

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced a concerning drop in student performance in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

Only 38.32 per cent of the 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the exam across 23,554 schools achieved the benchmark of five credits including English Language and Mathematics, a dramatic 33.8 per cent decrease from the 72.12 per cent pass rate in 2024.

At a press briefing held on August 4, 2025, WAEC’s Head of Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, attributed the decline to the Council’s implementation of serialised objective test papers in key subjects like English, Mathematics, Biology, and Economics.

This strategy was designed to curb collusion and reduce examination malpractice. While essay paper performance remained stable, scores in objective sections dropped notably, signaling a shift toward genuine individual effort.

WAEC also introduced a real-time digital scoring system to improve result processing speed and accuracy.

Additionally, candidates were given the option to take the exam via computer-based testing (CBT), a first for the Council and a step toward full digitisation by 2026.

Breakdown of results and demographics revealed that out of 1,517,517 (77.06%) released 451,796 (22.94%) are pending due to technical issues. 192,089 (9.75%) results withheld for malpractice,  a slight improvement from 11.92% in 2024. Gender split, while female candidates 50.40% while 49.60% male

Among successful candidates: Females led with 53.99% (407,353), males followed with 46.01% (347,192)

Dr. Dangut emphasized that states owing WAEC will not be able to access the results of their sponsored candidates until debts are cleared. He also condemned the spread of fake messages using WAEC’s name and confirmed that offenders have been apprehended.

Candidates can check their results via WAEC’s official portal and are encouraged to apply for their digital certificates within 48 hours of result confirmation.
