US to Review Green Cards from 19 Countries Following Washington Attack

In response to the recent attack on National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., the United States government has initiated a sweeping review of all Green Cards granted to citizens from 19 designated countries.

The Trump administration announced the measure on Thursday after the detained suspect in the attack was identified as a 29-year-old Afghan national who had previously worked alongside American forces.

According to the resettlement organization AfghanEvac, the suspect had been granted asylum in the United States in April 2025, not permanent residency.

Despite this distinction, the Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Joseph Edlow, stated on X, “I have directed a full-scale, rigorous re-examination of every Green Card for every alien from every country of concern.”

This review builds upon a previous travel order that had imposed a near-total entry ban on nationals from 12 of the listed countries. The countries subject to the policy are categorized as follows:

Countries Under Full Travel Ban:

Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

Countries Under Partial Ban:

Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.
