The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has demanded the immediate reinstatement of over 800 workers who were sacked by Dangote Petroleum Refinery amid a unionisation dispute.

The TUC, through its Secretary-General Nuhu Toro, has also called for a public apology from the refinery management, insisting that the dismissal of the workers be reversed and that such actions should not be used against the union in the future.

TUC accused Dangote Refinery of violating the constitutional rights of the workers by dismissing them arbitrarily.

The refinery cited incidents of sabotage and safety concerns as reasons for the reorganization that led to the job losses. However, the union claims the sackings were retaliation for the workers joining PENGASSAN, a union affiliated with TUC.

The dispute has escalated with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) mobilising affiliates for a full-scale engagement against the refinery’s alleged anti-worker practices.

TUC also criticized Dangote Refinery for what it described as economic oppression and called for respect of workers’ rights to unionize.

This conflict has brought significant attention due to the refinery’s massive investment and its importance to Nigeria’s energy sector, with concerns that continued disruption could negatively impact the economy and energy supply.
