Traditional ruler arrested for raping 12-year-old girl in Ondo
The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a traditional ruler, identified as Adeniyi Ifedayo, in the Laaagba community of Ondo East Local Government Area, over an allegation of a deeply disturbing and inexcusable crime against a child.
The command alleged that the monarch not only sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl but also illegally held her captive in his residence for two weeks—an act that underscores a grave abuse of power and trust placed in traditional institutions.
According to police reports, the victim, who is now receiving medical care at a confidential health facility in Ondo town, was lured into the suspect’s home by a commercial motorcyclist operating in the area.
The case has sparked widespread outrage as it shines a harsh light on the enduring threats of child abuse and the impunity of those who exploit positions of authority to commit acts that violate human dignity and fundamental rights. Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and advocates are calling for swift justice
‘The Baale kept me in his house for two weeks and fed me with pap while he assaulted me sexually on a daily basis,” she said.
“My parents became worried about my whereabouts and eventually raised an alarm, declaring me missing. After two weeks, the Baale took me on a motorcycle and dumped me at a location in Akure, the Ondo state capital.”
I. Y. Pickson, the commander of the Ondo area command of the Nigeria police, confirmed the incident.
Pickson said the case has been transferred to the state police command in Akure for further investigation.
Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, police spokesperson in Ondo, also confirmed the arrest of the suspect, adding that a thorough investigation is ongoing.
