I reflect on women who have made a lasting impact through their service in office, my attention is drawn to Hon. Toyin Abeke Balogun, the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion in Oyo State, whose dedication to uplifting the lives of women and vulnerable communities is truly encouraging.

I ponder on the growing number of women taking on multiple roles, Honourable Commissioner Toyin Balogun shines brightly as a beacon of dedication, resilience and selflessness. Her remarkable leadership as the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion in Oyo State is due to her tireless efforts to uplift the lives of women and vulnerable communities

As the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion in Oyo State, Hon. Toyin Balogun has, indeed, been a motivator and prime mover behind various initiatives aimed at empowering women, children and other vulnerable demographics. Her commitment to social inclusion and welfare is evident in her efforts to evacuate the destitute from major roads in Ibadan, ensuring their safety and well-being.

Some of her notable initiatives include: providing free school supplies to indigent students, enabling them to access quality education; promoting women’s empowerment and social inclusion, with a focus on creating environments where girls and women can exercise their power and choice; and collaborating with other government agencies to provide safer spaces for destitute and vocational training to make them self-reliant and this has largely addressed the issue of street-begging in Oyo State.

Also, one of her notable initiatives is the “Nutritious & Affordable Essentials for the ‘Sabi Woman’s’ Kitchen”, a weekly social media feature that provides nutritious and affordable food recipes, showcases the nutrient composition of various food items and highlights common and easily accessible food items, vegetables, and fruits. This intervention is evidence of her commitment to ensuring that families in Oyo State have access to healthy and nutritious food, despite the harsh economic climate.

Commissioner Balogun’s dedication to her work is evident in her efforts to provide support to indigent students and their parents through the “Back to School Giveaway Programme.” This initiative, which is part of the Oyo State government’s efforts to cushion the effects of economic hardship, provides free school supplies to students, enabling them to access quality education. Also, this programme helps to reduce the Out-of-School Children Index in the State.

As a champion of women’s empowerment, Commissioner Balogun has been vocal about the need to eliminate female genital mutilation (FGM) and other harmful practices that affect women and girls. Her advocacy efforts have helped raise awareness about these issues and promote a culture of zero tolerance for FGM. Indeed, Hon. Balogun has spoken out against this harmful practice, emphasising the need for collective action to create environments where girls and women can exercise their power and choice.
