Tinubu’s Aide Mocks PDP, ADC As APC Sweeps By-Elections In 11 States

The Presidency has taken a pointed swipe at opposition figures former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, following the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) impressive performance in Saturday’s by-elections.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga stirred political waters on Monday by posting a photo on X featuring Atiku, Obi, and other ADC leaders, captioned with the sarcastic remark: “How is the market now?”

Though no names were explicitly mentioned, the message was widely interpreted as a jab at the opposition’s lackluster showing.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted by-elections in 16 constituencies across 13 states to fill vacant legislative seats. The APC emerged victorious in 12 out of the 16 races, reinforcing its dominance across key regions.

Here’s a breakdown of the results:

  • APC Wins (12 Seats):
  • Remo Federal Constituency – Ogun State
  • Edo Central Senatorial District – Edo State
  • Garki-Babura Federal Constituency – Jigawa State
  • Basawa Constituency – Kaduna State
  • Munya Constituency – Niger State
  • Ghari Tsanyawa Constituency – Kano State
  • Zaria Kewaye Constituency – Kaduna State
  • Ovia Federal Constituency – Edo State
  • Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency – Kaduna State
  • Ganye Constituency – Adamawa State
  • Edo South Senatorial District – Edo State
  • Dekina-Okura II Federal Constituency – Kogi State

  • ADC: No wins recorded
  • Zamfara: Election declared inconclusive

Onanuga’s post underscores a growing narrative: opposition leaders who once vowed to reshape Nigeria’s political terrain are now grappling with diminished influence, while the APC continues to consolidate power.

The phrase “check the market” has become a metaphor for political reality, one where promises of disruption have yet to translate into electoral success.
