Tinubu To Address World Leaders At UN General Assembly

President Bola Tinubu is set to deliver his address at the 80th Session of the high-level General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN headquarters in New York on September 24.

According to a revised provisional speakers’ list from the UN, Tinubu will speak on the second day of the general debate, scheduled for the afternoon session around 8:30 p.m. local time (2:30 p.m. Nigerian time).

He will be the 17th speaker of that day among a distinguished assembly of 195 world leaders, including heads of state, vice-presidents, heads of government, and other dignitaries.

The General Debate will feature notable world figures such as Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who traditionally opens the event, followed by the U.S. President Donald Trump.

The UN indicated the speakers’ list might be updated, and Tinubu’s speaking slot could change if he does not attend in person.

In 2024, Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria at the UNGA, an unusual occurrence attributed to Nigeria’s strong international diplomatic relations.

The theme for this 80th session is “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.”

The session opened on September 9 with Annalena Baerbock of Germany inaugurated as president of the General Assembly, urging global unity to tackle pressing crises such as war, poverty, and climate change. Baerbock is notably the fifth woman to assume this role.

The high-level General Debate will run from September 23 to 29, alongside the broader high-level week from September 22 to 30. The events include commemorations for the UN’s 80th anniversary, a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) moment, the Climate Summit, the launch of the global dialogue on AI governance, and other significant meetings and conferences.

Tinubu’s speech at the UN General Assembly is likely to reinforce Nigeria’s proactive and ambitious foreign policy approach, known as the “4D Diplomacy Strategy,” which emphasizes Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora.

His address could strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic relations by reaffirming its leadership role in regional peace and stability, particularly within West Africa and the African continent, aligning with Nigeria’s traditional Afrocentric foreign policy focus.

Tinubu’s speech may also enhance Nigeria’s global stature by highlighting efforts to promote regional integration through ECOWAS and the African Union, while seeking deeper partnerships with international communities. This reflects his administration’s active push to attract foreign investment, foster economic diplomacy, and engage with global powers on key issues such as security and development.

Further, the speech offers Nigeria an opportunity to showcase its commitment to multilateralism and collective prosperity, which could improve relations with existing partners and open doors to new economic and geopolitical alliances, including Nigeria’s closer ties with emerging global blocs like BRICS.
