Tinubu Sends Ministers to UK to Negotiate Ekweremadu’s Prisoner Transfer
President Bola Tinubu has dispatched a high-powered ministerial delegation to London to initiate discussions with British authorities on the potential transfer of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to Nigeria to serve the remainder of his prison sentence.
The delegation, comprising the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, arrived in the United Kingdom on Monday and has since held talks with officials at the UK Ministry of Justice.
Confirming the development, Alkasim Abdulkadir, the spokesperson for the Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that the visit was a direct presidential directive. The objective is to explore all legal and diplomatic avenues for Ekweremadu’s repatriation under existing international prisoner-transfer frameworks.
Ekweremadu has been in UK custody since March 2023, when he was convicted alongside his wife, Beatrice, and a medical doctor, Obinna Obeta, for conspiring to exploit a young man for an organ transplant for their daughter. The landmark case resulted in a nine-year and eight-month sentence for the former lawmaker under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act.
While his wife, Beatrice, has since been released after serving part of her sentence and has returned to Nigeria, Ekweremadu remains incarcerated.
The Nigerian government’s move signals an effort to have him complete his jail term in a Nigerian correctional facility. This process is contingent upon a formal prisoner-transfer agreement and must meet the legal requirements of both nations. Officials have indicated that consultations are ongoing, with further developments expected as diplomatic engagements continue.
