Tight Security as Anambra Holds Governorship Election

Awka metropolis and surrounding areas are experiencing heightened security and final logistical preparations ahead of the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, November 8.

A correspondent from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who monitored developments across the state, observed an unusual calmness in the environment, with security presence visibly intensified.

Security personnel were stationed around key locations, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Awka, where vehicular traffic was redirected to alternative routes.

Along the Nibo–Nise corridor in Awka South Local Government Area, officers were deployed to strategic points, ensuring free movement for both pedestrians and vehicles.

At Eke Awka Market, trader Mrs. Ifeoma Egbo expressed concern over the tense atmosphere, attributing it to the overwhelming presence of security operatives and the sound of air patrols. “There are security men in uniforms in almost all the areas,” she said, adding that such a show of force might discourage elderly voters from participating.

In contrast, another trader, Mrs. Grace Anagor, noted a surge in customer turnout ahead of the weekend, describing it as unusual for a pre-election period. She welcomed the security deployment, saying it gave residents confidence in the government’s readiness. However, she urged security agencies to “operate professionally and with a human face.”

Earlier, security authorities announced the deployment of 60,000 personnel—including police and military officers—to safeguard the 5,720 polling units across the state.

INEC also reported a high level of voter readiness, with a 98.8% collection rate of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), signaling strong potential turnout for the election.
