Tension in Anambra as APGA, APC, LP hold governorship primaries same day

Anxiety is rising across the 336 electoral wards, 21 local government areas, and three senatorial districts of Anambra State as delegates prepare to elect candidates for the three major political parties at the governorship primaries scheduled for Saturday.

Leaders and stakeholders of the state chapters of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), All Progressives Congress (APC), and Labour Party (LP) remain uncertain about the modalities and guidelines for conducting the primaries smoothly. Attempts to reach party leadership for comments on their preparations and guidelines were unsuccessful, further heightening concerns.

In APGA, incumbent Governor Prof. Charles Soludo is the sole aspirant, with party delegates reportedly set to use an affirmation process to endorse him as their candidate for the November 8, 2025, election.

Meanwhile, APC faces internal turmoil following a contentious ward delegate congress that ended in stalemate and protests. The party cleared seven aspirants for its ticket but has yet to provide them with primary election guidelines. Aspirants have expressed frustration over the lack of communication, with one noting that members of the primary election committee are still away on pilgrimage and expected to meet in Abuja before briefing party stakeholders.

Labour Party has also been grappling with leadership challenges that may impact its ability to conduct a seamless primary process.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed receiving notification letters from all three parties about Saturday’s primaries. INEC’s Public Relations Officer in Anambra State, Mrs. Ugoma Lechukwu, assured that the Commission is prepared to monitor the elections as scheduled.

As uncertainty looms over preparations, all eyes are on the parties and INEC to ensure a transparent and credible process ahead of the November governorship election.
