Super Eagles Fall 2-1 to Egypt in Pre-AFCON Friendly
The Super Eagles of Nigeria fell 2-1 to Egypt in a pre-AFCON friendly in Cairo on Tuesday night, as both finalised preparations for the tournament in Morocco.
In a match intended to sharpen each team’s competitive edge, Nigeria showed commendable work rate but struggled to find rhythm in attack.
Egypt seized a deserved lead in the 28th minute. Midfielder Mahmoud Saber finished from close range, arriving unmarked at the back post after sustained pressure and a decisive cross from the lively winger Ahmed Sayed “Zizo.”
Nigeria’s best first-half chance came somewhat fortuitously. Paul Onuachu’s hopeful long ball nearly forced an own goal from defender Yasser Ibrahim, requiring a sharp reaction save from goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.
The close call seemed to spark the Super Eagles, who equalised deep into stoppage time. Defender Chidozie Awaziem reacted quickest to head home from close range in the 45+3rd minute after El Shenawy fumbled a free kick delivered by Zaidu Sanusi.
