Several Passengers Injured as Two BRT Buses Collide in Lagos
Several passengers sustained various degree of injuries on Thursday morning following a collision between two Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses at the Mangoro area of Lagos.
The accident occurred in Mangoro within the designated BRT lane on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. Emergency responders, assisted by bystanders, quickly transported the injured to a nearby medical facility. Authorities confirmed that no fatalities were recorded.
According to eyewitness accounts, the crash happened when one of the BRT buses swerved to avoid a commercial bus that had illegally entered the restricted corridor, resulting in a head-on collision with another BRT bus approaching from the opposite direction.
“The driver was trying to avoid hitting the commercial bus that suddenly drove into the lane,” a witness said. “In the process, he collided with another BRT coming from the other side.”
Traffic officials later arrived to manage congestion and remove the damaged vehicles from the road. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) is expected to release an official statement detailing the cause of the accident and outlining safety measures within the BRT corridor.
This incident adds to a growing list of similar accidents involving Lagos’s mass transit system. In August 2024, several passengers were injured in a head-on collision between two BRT buses at Dopemu. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported that the crash occurred when a bus swerved to avoid a commercial motorcyclist riding illegally in the BRT lane.
“All injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals, and no lives were lost,” said LASEMA spokesperson Nosa Okunbor. He added that two tow trucks were deployed to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow.
Earlier, in March 2023, a tragic incident at the PWD rail crossing in Ikeja claimed two lives and injured over 80 people when a Lagos State Government staff bus was struck by a train while attempting to cross the tracks. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the event as heartbreaking and commended Lagosians who assisted emergency responders.
More recently, in August 2024, ten passengers were injured when a BRT bus collided with the base of an abandoned pedestrian bridge near Iyana Ipaja. LASTMA confirmed the incident and noted that it caused significant traffic disruption.
Both LASTMA and LASEMA have repeatedly warned against unauthorized use of the BRT corridor by commercial vehicles and motorcycles, stressing that such violations continue to result in avoidable accidents and injuries.
