Qatar Tightens Visa Rules for Nigerians, Bars Solo Male Travelers
In response to a surge in visa overstays by Nigerian nationals, the Qatar Ministry of Interior has rolled out stricter visa regulations targeting Nigerian travelers.
The new policy, which takes immediate effect, applies to all pending and future visa applications.
According to a notice circulated by TravelTank, a travel support agency, the updated requirements include: Mandatory Return Transfer; applicants must now book a confirmed return transfer along with their hotel reservation before a tourist or transit visa can be processed.
Only female travelers and families are eligible to apply. Male applicants traveling alone will no longer be considered unless accompanied by family members. Accommodation Standards Raised. Only bookings at 5-star hotels will be accepted for visa qualification, significantly increasing the cost of travel.
The flyer explicitly states: “These requirements apply to all pending visa approvals,” urging clients to comply to avoid delays or outright rejections.
This move is widely seen as part of Qatar’s broader effort to enforce immigration compliance, following repeated incidents of Nigerian visitors overstaying their permitted duration.
The new restrictions are expected to significantly affect travel plans, particularly for solo male travelers, who now face exclusion from tourist and transit visa eligibility. The 5-star hotel requirement also raises financial barriers, potentially limiting access for budget-conscious travelers.
