President Tinubu Bids Yakubu Farewell, Confers National Honour
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally acknowledged the conclusion of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the expiration of his second term in office.
Professor Yakubu, who was initially appointed in November 2015 as the 14th chairman of the commission, served a five-year term which was renewed in 2020. His tenure has now ended with the completion of the second term.
In appreciation of Yakubu’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development, particularly his role in overseeing credible elections, President Tinubu expressed gratitude for his service and conferred upon him the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
The President also instructed that Yakubu hand over responsibilities to the most senior National Commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will oversee the commission’s operations pending the appointment of a new chairman.
In a letter dated October 3, 2025, Professor Yakubu thanked President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve the nation in this capacity over the past decade.
