The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria has launched a Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The campaign includes an online pre-registration phase which began on August 18, 2025, and a physical registration phase starting August 25, 2025.

Within the first seven hours of the online registration opening, over 69,000 Nigerians had already pre-registered, a number that is rapidly increasing. INEC is encouraging all eligible Nigerian citizens to participate in the exercise. The registration process allows eligible voters to pre-register online and then complete their registration physically at designated centers.

INEC has also cautioned against multiple registrations and warned that offenders will face legal consequences.

The campaign aims to increase voter registration and eventual participation in elections by simplifying the registration process and raising public awareness.

Moreover, this initiative is part of INEC’s broader efforts to improve voter turnout and democratic participation in Nigeria through expanded access, education, and the use of technology. Nigeria currently has over 93 million registered voters across numerous polling units nationwide.
