Osimhen-inspired Nigeria cruises past Gabon 4-1 to reach World Cup Play-Off final
Nigeria’s Super Eagles are one victory away from a shot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a commanding 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon in a tense CAF playoff semi-final in Rabat on Thursday.
The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, decided deep into extra time after Gabon clawed back from the brink of defeat. Nigeria thought they had secured the win in the 78th minute when Akor Adams pounced on a defensive error to slot the ball home, sending the Nigerian fans into delirium.
However, Gabon delivered a heartbreaking equalizer in the 89th minute through Mario Lemina, whose shot took a cruel deflection to sail past the Nigerian goalkeeper, forcing the game into an additional 30 minutes.
The Super Eagles regrouped magnificently, unleashing their superior quality in extra time. Chidera Ejuke broke the deadlock in the 97th minute, coolly finishing an assist from Wilfred Ndidi to restore Nigeria’s lead.
Then, star striker Victor Osimhen took over, putting the result beyond doubt with a quickfire brace. He first fired a brilliant angled shot into the net in the 102nd minute before adding a fourth in the 110th minute to seal a spectacular 4-1 triumph.
The victory books Nigeria’s place in the CAF playoff final, where they will face the winner of the clash between DR Congo and Cameroon. The ultimate prize for the final is a coveted spot in the intercontinental playoff for a chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
