Olubadan: Royal Drummers Relocates To Ladoja’s Home

Following the passing of the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, royal drummers have now relocated to the Bodija residence of Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja in Ibadan, signaling his imminent succession to the throne.

As the current Otun Olubadan, Ladoja’s elevation was expected, in line with Ibadan’s well-established and orderly system of succession.

A revered traditional figure and former Governor of Oyo State (2003–2006), Ladoja holds the highest position in the civil line of the Olubadan chieftaincy hierarchy.

Renowned for his deep experience, dedication to preserving Ibadan’s cultural legacy, and efforts to promote unity, Ladoja commands broad respect. Born on September 25, 1944, his distinguished career and leadership make him a compelling choice for the revered stool.

The Olubadan succession process involves confirmation by the Olubadan-in-Council, approval from the Oyo State Government, and a formal coronation ceremony.

This structured system had ensured stability and minimised disputes in Ibadan’s traditional rulership.

The process is designed to guarantee a seamless transition of power, and Ladoja’s ascension was expected to follow this well-established tradition.

As Otun Olubadan, Ladoja had played a significant role in the Olubadan-in-Council, demonstrating his leadership abilities and dedication to the traditional institution.

His experience as former governor of Oyo State had also given him a unique perspective on governance, which could benefit the traditional institution.

If Ladoja ascends the throne, the Balogun line would produce the next Olubadan after his reign, continuing the alternating pattern that has characterised Ibadan’s traditional rulership.

This system has worked well over the years, ensuring that power is distributed fairly and that each line has an opportunity to produce a monarch.

The installation of a new Olubadan was a significant event in Ibadanland, and the process is expected to be carried out with the utmost dignity and respect for tradition.

The Oyo State government, led by governor Seyi Makinde, would play a crucial role in confirming Ladoja’s ascension and ensuring a smooth transition.

With his distinguished background and role in the Olubadan-in-Council, Oba Ladoja is well-positioned to lead Ibadanland into a new era.
