Obasanjo Prescribes Four-Pillar Plan to Tackle Insecurity
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has identified four critical elements – intelligence, training, equipment, and technology – as indispensable pillars for tackling Nigeria’s deep-seated insecurity.
Speaking during The Toyin Falola Interviews on Sunday, held via Zoom and moderated by Professor Toyin Falola, Obasanjo engaged with Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Kukah Centre and former presidential candidate Professor Kingsley Moghalu.
He emphasized that insecurity now permeates every region and called for a modern, comprehensive national response.
“When I talk about intelligence, training, equipment, and technology, I know exactly what I am saying,” Obasanjo stated. “Beyond these, we must cultivate the right attitude and an honest commitment to confront insecurity decisively.”
He outlined that strengthening intelligence gathering, improving personnel training, adequately equipping security forces, and integrating advanced technology are non-negotiable steps toward stability.
Obasanjo cautioned that the federal government must ensure no region is neglected in security operations, underscoring that the crisis demands both national unity and global collaboration.
“We have security challenges across the South-East, South-West, and North-East. This is a national issue,” he said. “If our government is overwhelmed, there is nothing wrong with turning to the international community. We are part of a global family, and the world has a vested interest in our peace and stability.”
The former president also sounded an alarm on Nigeria’s growing population of out-of-school children, warning that failing to address this could fuel long-term security threats.
