Obasa may resign as Speaker before Wednesday

If the agreement reached by the leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC) on the leadership crisis rocking Lagos State House of Assembly will be strictly adhered to, the embattled Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa will “step aside” before Wednesday.

It was gathered that the leadership of the party was unanimous in their decision to endorse a new Speaker for the Assembly.

But there are fears among members of the party if their leaders will not change their minds and retain Obasa as the Speaker.

As part of the condition for truce in the crisis-ridden Assembly, Obasa was returned as the Speaker while Mojisola Meranda was reinstated as Deputy Speaker.

David Setonji returned to his role as Deputy Chief Whip, Richard Kasumu was appointed Deputy Majority Leader, Adewale Temitope assumed the position of Majority Leader, and Mojeed Fatai was named Chief Whip.

The reinstatement followed a period of intense political maneuvering, sparked by Obasa’s initial impeachment on allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of office.

During his return speech, Obasa expressed gratitude to his colleagues and party leaders who intervened in the crisis, acknowledging their efforts in securing his reinstatement. He commended them for their assistance and for working to ensure his return to his position.

Meranda while reading her resignation letter out at the plenary Monday on afternoonsaid she had to let go in the interest of peace and love for the party.

Commending her for the decision to step down, Hon Temitope Adewale said, “The entire chamber is in tears. You have restored the spirit of friendship, comradeship, and loyalty to this House. We now have a renewed sense of belonging and an understanding that the party is supreme.”

He added, “To my dear colleagues, this is not the end—this is Asiwaju’s House. Let’s not lose hope; things will change for the better.”

Another lawmaker remarked, “You did very well, but as we know, we are politicians, and in politics, our party is supreme. We are proud party members, and our party has spoken. I thank the Deputy Speaker and everyone else affected. We are here to obey the party, and we are not ashamed of it. Madam Speaker, I pray for you—may God Almighty be with you.”

“You have listened to the Speaker and are willing to let go,” another legislator added. Meranda assumed office on January 13, 2025, following the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who is reportedly poised for reinstatement.
