Nnamdi Kanu Sentenced to Life Imprisonment
The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The judgment was delivered on Thursday in a dramatic session from which Kanu was absent.
The sentencing concludes a long-running terrorism case brought by the Federal Government. The proceeding unfolded without the defendant present after Kanu reportedly refused to participate in the day’s session, insisting that “the judgement would not be delivered.”
This defiance was the culmination of a legal strategy Kanu maintained throughout the trial. Following his conviction earlier in the day, the prosecution, led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), had urged the court to impose the death penalty, citing over 75 security personnel killed due to IPOB’s activities and arguing that the Terrorism Prevention Act mandated a capital sentence for several of the counts.
