Nigerian Anglican Church Denounces Lesbian Archbishop, Condemns Spiritual Decadence In Wales

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has rejected the election of Rt. Rev. Cherry Vann, an openly lesbian cleric, as the Archbishop of Wales, describing the move as a “serious departure from biblical teaching” and a threat to the unity of the global Anglican Communion.

This latest condemnation builds on a growing theological and ideological divide between the Nigerian Anglican Church and its Western counterparts, particularly the Church of England.

The Church of Nigeria had previously severed formal ties with the Church of England over its perceived liberal stance on same-sex relationships and gender identity within the clergy.

The election of Bishop Vann, who is in a civil partnership, has reignited tensions and reaffirmed Nigeria’s alignment with conservative Anglican movements such as GAFCON (Global Anglican Future Conference).

In a statement signed by Primate Henry Ndukuba, the Church described Vann’s elevation as “spiritual decadence” and “an outright abandonment of the faith once delivered to the saints.”

He warned that such decisions compromise the credibility of the Anglican mission and hinder evangelism efforts globally.

Drawing parallels to the controversial tenure of Most Rev. Katherine Jefferts Schori, former Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the U.S., Ndukuba accused Vann of contributing to the “ongoing crisis” surrounding same-sex issues in the Church.

Quoting 2 Timothy 4:3–4, the Primate urged Anglicans worldwide to reject what he termed “apostasy” and realign with biblically faithful bodies.

He warned that unless the Church in Wales repents, it risks spiritual irrelevance and divine judgment.

“We believe that our Lord Jesus Christ will build His Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it,” Ndukuba declared.

This development marks another chapter in the ongoing struggle over doctrine, identity, and authority within the Anglican Communion, a struggle that continues to reshape its global alliances and theological boundaries.
