Muyiwa Adeyemi: A genuine comrade at 60

Both of us hailed from Yewa (formerly Egbado), but we met at The Guardian. As the Chairman of the NUJ Chapel, l discovered while fighting for improved welfare of staff members, he exhibited a courageous skill. We were in Sokoto together as Lagos Council delegates to elect late Ladi Lawal.

During the struggle for an improved working conditions of our colleagues the role he played was legendary. Together with his twin brother, Bolaji Tunji , they were exceptional but I give him  kudos especially when we invited now Senator Adams Oshiohmole the then President of the Nigerian Labour Congress. The stage entered a higher pedestal. I salute his courage today as he entered the 60 floor. Congratulations.

I remembered that during the administration of President Obasanjo when airplanes were falling from the sky, l did a day trip to Abuja and on my return to Lagos, Muyiwa,  Dickson Adeyanju and myself went to celebrate my return at a drinking joint at Okota. Hardly we settled down when armed gang attacked us. We all lost our phones to them.

Since then, I  dreaded drinking at such places.

Also, he played a significant role in The Guardian Staff Cooperative Society where we secured land. We made endless trips to Lusada to meet Baba loja .

Despite Muyiwa’s efforts to make sure both Editorial and Non- Editorial Staff of The Guardian have abundant life, he did not allow Aluta to disturb his primary duty as a diligent journalist.

I was with him when he went to Ondo to interview the late Olowo of Owo Oba Folagbade Olateru -Olagbegi, together we were in Abuja to interview former Inspector General of Police, Ehindero among other editorial assignments. He was on top of reportage of Abiola’s death when he was making front page stories everyday.

Infact, he had sources giving him exclusive stories when Abiola was incarcerated by Abacha, God bless the late physician to Abiola, Dr Ore Falomo who we later know was majorly behind Muyiwa’s exclusive copies.

He reported activities of NADECO during the agitation to help late Chief MKO Abiola to reclaim his presidential winning as if he was one of them.  So, it’s not a surprise when he was promoted as Group Political Editor of The Guardian.

On this day, I joined others to celebrate you and pray that God will continue to grant you good health.
