Nigerian singer Yemi Alade has revealed that she was sexually harassed by music executives as a teenager while trying to break into the music industry.

She said these experiences were frequent and serious enough that they made her question whether she wanted to continue pursuing music at all.

What Yemi Alade Said

Alade explained that, as a young, struggling artist with limited resources, she would attend meetings and studio sessions expecting to be judged on her talent, but some executives instead made unwanted sexual advances.

She recounted incidents where older industry figures in positions of power touched her inappropriately during supposed business meetings, including rubbing her thighs under the table while she was still a teenager.

How She Responded

She described reaching a point where the harassment was so common that she had to seriously consider whether to remain in the industry.

Ultimately, she decided to continue, focusing on her talent and adopting a mindset of “breaking down walls” rather than depending on doors controlled by such executives, which she links to eventually finding success.

Why It Matters

Alade’s account adds to the growing number of testimonies about sexual harassment and abuse of power in the entertainment industry, especially targeting young women.

Her story highlights both the vulnerability of emerging artists and the need for stronger protections, support systems, and accountability mechanisms in the music business.
