Mohammed Yusuf, Boko Haram Founder’s Son Arrested In Chad
Muslim Mohammed Yusuf, the youngest son of Boko Haram’s late founder, has been arrested in Chad, where he was allegedly leading a jihadist cell linked to the notorious terrorist group.
According to Nigerian intelligence source and a former insurgent familiar with the group’s inner workings, Yusuf was apprehended alongside five other suspected militants.
Boko Haram, founded in northeastern Nigeria by radical cleric Mohammed Yusuf in the early 2000s, has been responsible for widespread terror across the Lake Chad region.
Since its insurgency began in 2009, the group has claimed the lives of over 35,000 people directly, while the total death toll, including indirect causes such as displacement and starvation, has reached nearly 350,000, according to United Nations estimates.
The group’s atrocities include mass abductions, suicide bombings, and attacks on villages, schools, and military installations, with Borno State suffering the highest number of casualties.
Chadian police confirmed the arrest of six individuals believed to be Boko Haram members, though they did not officially identify Yusuf among them.
However, intelligence reports from Nigeria’s Lake Chad region indicate that the cell was led by Muslim Yusuf, who was reportedly an infant when his father was killed during a 2009 military crackdown that left hundreds dead.
A former lieutenant of Mohammed Yusuf, now a vocal critic of Boko Haram, also confirmed the arrest, stating, “He and the team were arrested by Chadian security. They are six in number.”
Chadian authorities described the suspects as undocumented “bandits” operating within the capital, N’djamena.
Police spokesman Paul Manga noted that the arrests occurred “a few months ago,” and investigations are ongoing.
The capture of Muslim Yusuf underscores the enduring threat posed by Boko Haram and its splinter factions, even as regional forces continue efforts to dismantle their networks and restore stability to the region.
