GAC member, Bashorun urges Obasa to respect agreement with party leaders
A member of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), of the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) Pa Olorunfunmilayo Bashorun, has advised the returned Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, to respect the tripartite agreement reached by the leadership of party, which resolved the crisis in the Assembly.
He warned that doing otherwise will portray him in a bad light and affect the party.
Pa Bashorun who declined to be specific on the agreement said Obasa was not oblivious of their discussions with Chief Bisi Akande led committee that finally resolved the matter.
While commending the Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda for obeying the agreement to step down said, she has indeed, proved to be an honourable lady with a brighter future in politics.
Pa Bashorun who was the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) under Governor Lateef Jakande in the second republic denied factions among GAC members. He said, “We are united in GAC, we are elders and we are all committed to the development of our party. We don’t talk like that in the public, but when everything is settled, we shall talk more but this is a period we are all working assiduously to ensure peace returns to the Assembly and we forget the past. But I can assure you that Lagos APC will come out stronger and united after these challenges.”
When asked to confirm the reports that part of the agreement reached by the GAC is that Obasa should resign tomorrow for emergence of new speaker from Lagos West, Baba Bashorun said, “I am an elder of the party, there are agreement reached, Meranda has respected the agreement and played her part, we expect Obasa to play his part as well. Let’s wait and see how events are unfolding.
Members of the State Assembly had on January 12 removed Obasa as the Speaker for offences bothering on corruption and misappropriation of funds and elected Meranda as Speaker. But a few days later, members of GAC blamed the lawmakers for not carrying the party along and a committee led by Chief Akande was empowered to resolve the crisis.
Obasa who had instituted a legal action against the lawmakers stormed the Assembly on Thursday and gained entrance to the Speaker’s office.
The leadership of the party met and resolved that Meranda should return to his former office as Deputy Speaker while Obasa should be allowed to return to office and properly resign for the emergence of a new speaker from Lagos West.
