Just In: Tragedy At OAU As Medical Student Commits  Suicide After Failing Exam Twice

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has confirmed the tragic death of Ajibola Ibitayo, a Part Two medical student in the Faculty of Dentistry, who reportedly died by suicide.

According to a statement released on Thursday by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, Ibitayo took his own life after receiving his examination results, which indicated he would have to repeat Part Two for a second consecutive year. His matriculation number was DEN/2021/023.

“The entire university community is in mourning,” Olarewaju stated. “Ajibola Ibitayo, a promising student of the Faculty of Dentistry, reportedly ended his life after learning that he had failed his examinations and would need to repeat the academic year once again.”

The student, whose father is a medical doctor, allegedly administered a fatal injection at his family’s residence in Ejigbo, Osun State.

In response to the incident, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Simeon Bamire expressed deep sorrow and urged parents and guardians to help their children understand that academic setbacks are not the end of life.

He encouraged students to view failure as a stepping stone to future success and personal growth.

Prof. Bamire also offered prayers for comfort and strength to the bereaved family, the Faculty of Dentistry, the College of Health Sciences, and the wider university community.
