Just-In: Tinubu Moves to Reset Foreign Policy, Sends First Ambassador List to Senate
President Bola Tinubu has submitted his first list of ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for confirmation, marking a significant step in filling the nation’s top diplomatic posts.
The list, which was forwarded to the upper legislative chamber on Wednesday, contains three names: Kayode Are from Ogun State, Aminu Dalhatu from Jigawa State, and Ayodele Oke.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the submission during the day’s plenary session, which was broadcast live. After reading the President’s official communication, Akpabio indicated that this was an initial batch, stating, “The list contains three names for now. I am sure others will follow.”
The development is coming following the growing concerns over Nigeria’s strained diplomatic footing with key foreign partners, including a perceived cooling of relations with the United States and a failure to successfully negotiate a prison exchange with the United Kingdom in the case of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.
This move comes after a notable delay since President Tinubu took office in May 2023, a period during which the absence of confirmed ambassadors has drawn criticism and left key diplomatic positions vacant.
The Senate is now expected to commence the screening and confirmation process for the nominees.
