Just-In:  Olubadan-In-Council Ratifies Ladoja As 44th Olubadan Of Ibadan

In a moment steeped in history and vindication, the Olubadan-In-Council has formally nominated Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, marking the culmination of a decades-long journey defined by political resilience, legal triumphs, and unwavering commitment to tradition.

The nomination took place on Monday at the Olubadan Palace, Oke-Aremo, in Ibadan North Local Government Area.

Though the incoming monarch was not present, the council, led by Balogun Olubadan, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, confirmed that all members had signed the resolution.

The document will now be forwarded to Governor Seyi Makinde, who is expected to announce a date for the formal presentation of the staff of office following the burial of the late Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed on July 7, 2025.

Oba Ladoja’s path to the throne is unlike any other in Ibadan’s  history.

A former governor of Oyo State who was elected in 2003 but faced an unconstitutional impeachment in 2006 after clashing with political godfather Lamidi Adedibu over control of state resources.

Rather than retaliate, Ladoja pursued justice through the courts, and in December 2006, the Supreme Court reinstated him, setting a precedent for democratic accountability.

Following his tenure, Ladoja returned to Ibadan’s traditional hierarchy, rising steadily through the civil chieftaincy line, a system based on seniority and service.

In 2017, he again defended the sanctity of the institution when then-Governor Abiola Ajimobi attempted to crown multiple high chiefs as kings. Ladoja challenged the move in court and won.

In August 2024, Ladoja accepted the title of Otun Olubadan, the final step before ascending the throne. His nomination now represents not just a ceremonial transition but a symbolic victory for tradition, law, and perseverance.

Ibadan’s unique chieftaincy system, which operates through two parallel lines, civil and military, ensures that the throne is earned through loyalty and patience, not lineage or wealth.
