Just-In: Labour Rejects Tinubu’s Appeal, Proceeds with Protest Against Insecurity
Despite a last-minute meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday night, his intervention appears to have failed to convince labour leaders to call off their nationwide protest against insecurity.
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has affirmed it will proceed with the mass action as scheduled. Addressing reporters at the Labour House in Abuja on Wednesday, NLC President Joe Ajaero stated: “the protest would hold as planned.”
Activists, including Omoyele Sowore, have already gathered with Ajaero at the Labour House, preparing to begin the demonstration.
The high-stakes meeting at the Presidential Villa was attended by key government figures, including the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State; Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State; Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State; and the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
Led by Ajaero, the closed-door talks were a final effort to find common ground and avert the protest planned for December 17. However, no official statement on the outcome was released, and the NLC’s unwavering position suggests the discussions did not yield an agreement to suspend the action.
The NLC had previously declared there would be “no going back” on the protest, emphasizing the urgency of addressing public concerns over the nation’s security crisis.
