Just-In: 22 Traders Dead, 20 Injured in Niger State Trailer Crash
In a harrowing road accident that underscores the peril of Nigeria’s deteriorating highways, no fewer than 22 lives were lost and 20 others severely injured in a lone trailer crash along the Lapai–Lambata road in Niger State on Monday.
The ill-fated vehicle, reportedly transporting both cattle and passengers from Kano to Lagos, plunged into disaster during an early morning journey.
Many of the victims, traders from Zamfara State, were said to be traveling for commercial purposes.
Eyewitnesses and local sources blamed the tragedy on the poor state of the road, riddled with potholes that make navigation treacherous, especially for heavy-duty vehicles.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander, Aishat Saadu, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, stating that it occurred around 3 a.m. and involved a single trailer.
Of the 42 individuals onboard, 22 were declared dead on the spot while 20 others were rushed to FMC Lambata for treatment.
The deceased were taken to the General Hospital in Suleja.
