Jonathan Safely Evacuated from Guinea-Bissau Under Military Escort
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has successfully departed from Guinea-Bissau, following the military coup that threw the West African nation into turmoil on Wednesday.
Concerns had mounted for the safety of the former Nigerian leader, who was in the country as part of an international election observation mission when the military seized power, closed borders, and suspended flights.
A family source confirmed his departure on Thursday. “We have just landed in Abidjan and will soon leave for Abuja,” an aide traveling with Jonathan stated around 4 p.m., confirming they had arrived in the Ivorian economic capital to connect a flight back to Nigeria.
Earlier on Thursday, Jonathan’s cousin, Robert Azibaola, had confirmed to news outlets that the former president was safe but temporarily unable to leave the country. “I have spoken with him severally today. There is no threat to his life. We are in constant touch with him,” Azibaola said.
His successful exit from Guinea-Bissau brings a close to a brief period of uncertainty surrounding his status after the destabilizing coup.
