India faces the threat of a global football ban for the second time in three years due to the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) failure to finalize and ratify a new constitution.
FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have jointly set a deadline of October 30, 2025, for the AIFF to complete this process. The current AIFF constitution has been pending approval by India’s Supreme Court since 2017.
If the AIFF fails to comply, FIFA may suspend India from all international football activities, meaning India’s national teams and clubs would be barred from international competitions.
This would be a serious setback for Indian football, worsening an already tumultuous situation that includes disputes threatening the Indian Super League (ISL) and risking jobs for thousands of players and staff.
India was previously suspended by FIFA in August 2022 for third-party interference when a Supreme Court-appointed committee managed the federation; however, that suspension lasted only ten days after fresh elections brought in a new president for the AIFF.
The current demand emphasizes the urgent need for a compliant governance structure aligned with FIFA and AFC statutes .
