How I was attacked by APC Thugs – Malami
Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has provided details on an attack against his convoy by suspected political thugs believed to be affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State on Monday.
Malami stated that he was returning from a condolence visit to the Emir’s palace when the attack occurred. The convoy was assaulted with dangerous weapons by political thugs who suddenly appeared. Writing on his official Facebook page on Tuesday, Malami described the day as “a sad day and a negative chapter in Kebbi State’s political history.”
He explained that while returning from offering condolences to the Emir of Gwandu and the family of the late Imam Tukur Kola in Birnin Kebbi, his convoy was violently attacked near his private residence by thugs emerging from the nearby APC State headquarters. Stones and other dangerous objects were thrown, causing damage to vehicles and injuries to several people, including fractures.
Malami emphasized that this was not random hooliganism but a politically motivated assault allegedly orchestrated and funded by influential figures prioritizing do-or-die politics over governance. He noted the visible presence of APC stalwarts and close associates of the Governor at the scene during the attack.
Despite the presence of security personnel, the assailants sought refuge inside the party headquarters, and no arrests were made, which Malami described as deliberate inaction. He stressed that the incident was not about him personally but a reflection of the troubling direction Kebbi State and Nigeria are heading—where violence and intimidation overshadow dialogue and governance, even as over 133 million Nigerians face multidimensional poverty according to NBS data.
Malami warned that the Kebbi State Government should not fear him but should be wary of the consequences of their actions, historical judgment, and the frustration of the impoverished and insecure populace.
In response, the Kebbi State government dismissed Malami’s claims, suggesting he had ulterior motives and should reflect on speaking the truth. Chief Press Secretary Ahmed Idris stated there was no political rally at the time, questioned why Malami would visit a bereaved family amid thugs, and confirmed no APC members were at the party office during the incident. He reiterated that neither the party nor the state government was involved in the attack.
