Ghana has suspended all boxing activities nationwide following the tragic death of professional super-middleweight boxer Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey.

He died at age 32, 11 days after sustaining severe injuries during a bout in Accra.

This is the second professional boxing death in Ghana within six months, with the earlier death being Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju in March.

The National Sports Authority (NSA), in consultation with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, halted boxing to prioritize athlete safety and announced plans for a five-year safety and development strategy aimed at improving medical, technical, and regulatory standards in Ghanaian boxing to meet global benchmarks.

This suspension and reform plan reflect a commitment to protect lives, uphold the sport’s integrity, and secure its future in Ghana, where boxing has a strong historic presence particularly in the Bukom community.
