From Comedy to Kingship: Okey Bakassi becomes monarch of Umuihuocha

Renowned Nigerian comedian and actor, Okey Bakassi, has been named the traditional ruler of the Umuihuocha Autonomous Community in Mbaise, Imo State.

Born Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule on October 23, 1969, the celebrated entertainer will officially take on the title of His Royal Highness Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, Okwe II of Umuihuocha Obohia Autonomous Community, during his coronation.

This appointment signifies a significant shift in Bakassi’s journey, moving from a distinguished career in entertainment to a role of traditional leadership and community service.

Sharing the news on his social media, the 55-year-old comedian described the honor as a “Next Level” achievement. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Umuihuocha for their trust and emphasized his commitment to serving the community, writing, “Service to Community.”

His appointment has received widespread congratulations from friends, colleagues, and fans.

Fellow comedian Gbenga Adeyinka offered a heartfelt message, stating: “Congratulations on your new elevation by the Umuihuocha Autonomous Community! This is a remarkable achievement, and I pray for your continued success in this important role. May you inspire positive change and demonstrate impressive leadership as you guide your community. Shaibu Husseini, the executive director of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), also referred to him as “Ichie Na Umuihoichia.”

Beyond his successful entertainment career, Okey Bakassi has previously served as senior special adviser (SSA) on entertainment matters to former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim.

Bakassi’s ascension to the throne marks a pivotal moment in his life, highlighting his deep connection to his roots and his commitment to serving his community.

The coronation ceremony is expected to attract prominent figures from various sectors, including traditional, religious, and political leaders. Although the date has not been confirmed, preparations are already underway to ensure a memorable event.
