Five die, one injured in Ife-Ilesa road accident

A tragic motor accident along the Ife-Ilesa road in Osun State has claimed the lives of five individuals, including a young girl.

The Federal Road Safety Corps, Osun Command, through its Public Enlightenment Officer Agnes Ogungbemi, confirmed the incident on behalf of Sector Commander Taofeek Sokunbi.

According to Ogungbemi, a trailer collided with a white Toyota Hilux (registration number: FKJ691HZ), resulting in the deaths of five out of the nine passengers involved in the crash.

She said that the driver of the white colour trailer with no obvious registration number was nabbed and handed over to the police at Edun Abun division, adding that the crashed vehicles were also taken over by the police.

According to her, the injured female passenger had been rushed to Mayowa Hospital, Ipetumodu, while the corpses were taken to the mortuary of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife.

Ogungbemi stated that the accident was caused by overspeeding and one way traffic violation.

She said the road mishap happened at about 10:15am on Saturday adding that the affected drivers and passengers included six male adults, two female adults, and one female child.

The FRSC official added that a sum of N508,900 that was discovered in one of the vehicles had been handed over to relatives of the victims at the scene of the accident.

She said: “The Sector Commander, Corps Commander T. A. Sokunbi warns road users to desist from the offence of route violation and excessive speeding. He added that the driver is presently in NPF custody and will be charged to court.

“Recovered Items: A small bag containing jewelries, bags of clothes, cash of Five Hundred and Eight Thousand Nine Hundred Naira only (#508,900).

“Action Taken: The injured victim was taken to Mayowa Hospital, Ipetumodu, while the dead bodies were taken to OAUTH mortuary. The items recovered were handed over to the family members of the victims at the scene in the presence of NPF Edun Abon, NPF Toll Gate. The crashed vehicles had been taken over by Nigerian Police Force, Edun-Abun.

“The only surviving woman was the one travelling with her family and her house maid,” the statement read.
