FG Shuts 22 Illegal Tertiary Institutions

The Federal Government has ramped up efforts to eliminate illegal tertiary institutions, shutting down 22 unauthorized Colleges of Education nationwide.

This enforcement action was carried out by the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) as part of its ongoing crackdown on unaccredited academic establishments.

According to the Commission, the operation also included a comprehensive personnel audit and financial oversight across all 21 federally recognized Colleges of Education.

This move follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive to key regulatory bodies, the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and the NCCE, to purge the education sector of institutions operating without proper accreditation.

Speaking at the 14th convocation ceremony of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Rakiya Ilyasu, Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, condemned the proliferation of “certificate millers” that threaten the credibility of Nigeria’s academic system.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration among educational agencies to boost efficiency and uphold academic standards.

Tinubu emphasized that bodies such as the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), NUC, NBTE, and NCCE are working in concert to enhance the quality of education and eliminate forgery and the influence of unrecognized institutions both within and beyond Nigeria’s borders.
