FG Endorses Lekki Seaport Dredging
The Federal Government has approved dredging of the Lekki Deep Seaport. Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, revealed this in a post on X.
He assured that the NPA will provide every support necessary to enable the port to unleash the benefits of economies of scale on the national economy.
Speaking when he paid an output-consolidation visit to the facility on Saturday, Dantsoho said, “This Management intends to more frontally position the national economy to reap the multi-dimensional benefits of economies of scale that Lekki Port, with its capacity to berth super post-panamax sized vessels, possesses”.
The development follows the Minister of Marine & Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola ‘s endorsement of the NPA and Lekki Port’s strategic alliance to dredge the Lekki Port beyond its current draft in readiness for growing vessel and cargo throughput.
Explaining further, the NPA helmsman said, “The quality of infrastructure and equipment, Lekki Port signposts the direction we are looking at, especially as we aggressively pursue the implementation of our port modernisation programme”.
Going by the steady increase in transhipment numbers from Lekki, he said that the port is already set to meet the maritime needs of landlocked neighbouring countries.
“The fully automated status of Lekki is very much in tandem with our drive to fully automate all our ports with the policy backing and support of the Honourable Minister of Marine & Blue Economy His Excellency, Gboyega Oyetola, CON” who is at forefront of the resolve to deploy the Port Community System (PCS) which the NPA has fast tracked to final stages in readiness for the National Single window (NSW)”.
He said the SeaPort’s distinctive features, which position it for quick cargo and vessel turnaround, will greatly enhance the competitiveness of our exports, especially agro-allied products in the international marketplace, especially as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) gains momentum.
He said, “With enhanced competitiveness comes increased demand, which ultimately grows FOREX inflow into the country.
“We appreciate and commend the Management of Lekki Deep Seaport for sustaining superior performance. The NPA remains unwavering in its efforts at providing every support and facilitation necessary to ensure the optimisation of this port”.
The visit had in attendance Board Chairman Lekki Port, Abiodun Dabiri, Managing Director Lekki Port, Qiang Wang, Executive Director Finance & Administration NPA, Vivian Richard-Edet, Director Lekki Port Alhaji Olabode Oyedele and other very senior officials of NPA and Lekki Port.
