FG Demands Death Penalty for Nnamdi Kanu As Court Resumes 4pm

 In a dramatic turn at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the prosecution has demanded the death penalty for Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following his conviction on terrorism charges.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Adegboyega Awomolo, representing the prosecution, urged the court to impose the maximum sentence, stating that Kanu’s activities had led to the deaths of over 75 security personnel and the destruction of innocent lives and property.

He argued that subjecting Kanu to the ultimate punishment would deliver justice to the victims.

Citing the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act 2013, Awomolo emphasized that the law mandates a death sentence for the offences in Counts One, Two, Four, Five, and Six, for which Kanu was convicted. “With all sense of humility, I say as a prosecutor that this court has no discretion in that regard,” he submitted. “The only sentence Your Lordship can impose for these counts is death.”

Following these submissions, Justice James Omotosho adjourned proceedings until 3:50 p.m. today, at which time he is expected to deliver the sentencing decision.
