Following seven-day period of national mourning announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement was made by Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed in Abuja by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani. The Minister described the holiday as a tribute to the late President’s devoted service, his pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic path, and his lasting contributions to national development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari exemplified dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and advancement of our nation. This day offers all Nigerians a moment to reflect on his legacy and the principles he stood for,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
He called on citizens to commemorate the occasion by embracing peace, unity, and patriotic spirit, in line with Buhari’s aspirations for Nigeria. The government also reaffirmed that national flags will continue to be flown at half mast throughout the mourning period, from Sunday, July 13.
