El-Rufai, Obi, Aregbesola join forces to wrestle power from President Tinubu
Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, the realignment of political forces against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is getting stronger with the agreement within the trio of the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and former Minister of Internal Affairs, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola to wrestle power from President Bola Tinubu.
To achieve their objective, El-Rufai had on Monday dumped APC for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing the failure of his former party to solve socio-economic challenges facing Nigeria and its departure from democratic ethos upon which the party was founded as chief reasons for his defection.
Sources close to the three leaders told Sentinelnewsng.com that both Obi and Aregbeola will also soon announce their defections to the SDP, the platform they have agreed to use to achieve their objective.
It was gathered that Aregbesola supporters that had been hobnobbing with New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Osun State following their exit from the APC had halted their discussions with the party for the new political direction that will soon be made public.
Aregbesola had been in a running battle with President Bola Tinubu over political leadership of APC in Osun State, which eventually led to the former governor and his supporters leaving the party.
It was also gathered that Peter Obi was waiting to get a concrete assurance from El-Rufai and the national chairman of the SDP, Shehu Musa Gabam of getting the party’s presidential ticket before joining them.
Although El-Rufai has hinted that he will not contest for the 2027 presidential election but will support a southern candidate to defeat President Tinubu. However, there are fears among Obi’s supporters if El-Rufai could be trusted.
El-Rufai’s son, Bashir who had been critical of Obi’s presidential ambition suddenly changed after his father’s defection to SDP said, “Peter Obi is surprisingly not a bad person after all. My views on him have changed recently. My mind was poisoned by my former party members. Sai Obi!”
In his official letter of resignation, El-Rufai said “Developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party.”
El-Rufai said he had repeatedly raised concerns about the party’s leadership but saw no effort to address them.
“Without prejudice to this decision, as a member of the SDP, I will focus on engaging with and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to join us and congregate under a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in all elections and bye-elections between now and 2027 by the Grace of God.
“I, therefore, call on all our supporters and other persons concerned about our country’s future to join us in the SDP in the journey towards making Nigeria flourish as a beacon of pride for Africans and the Black Race.”

But a former presidential spokesperson and social media influencer, Remo Omokiri, has described El-Rufai as a political liability, dismissing insinuations that El-Rufai’s defection from APC will affect the party’s chances in winning the 2027 presidential election.
In a tweet in his X handle, Omokiri said, “When Malam Nasir el-Rufai was a member of the APC and an incumbent governor of Kaduna State, the party lost the 2023 Presidential elections in Kaduna to the Peoples Democratic Party. The PDP also won all three Senatorial elections in Kaduna. In addition, PDP won 10 seats out of a total of 16 seats for the House of Representatives in the state, while the Labour Party won 2, leaving only 4 seats for the APC.
“Finally, APC only narrowly won the gubernatorial election, with 730,002 votes to the PDP’s 719,196. The margin of victory was a mere 10,806.
If Malam Nasir el-Rufai performed so woefully at the polls as an incumbent governor, why should anyone lose sleep over him leaving the All Progressives Congress for the Social Democratic Party, which died in 1993 and has been in the mortuary pending burial in 2027?

“I wish the Butcher of Kaduna, Nasir el-Rufai, luck in his fourth political party since 1999. At least the Southern Kaduna Genocide has ended. Any state that wants what Southern Kaduna and Shiites suffered under el-Rufai can vote for the SDP in 2027.
