Doctor Gets Life Imprisonment for Poisoning 30 Patients, Killing 12
A French court on Thursday sentenced a doctor to life in prison for poisoning 30 patients, 12 of whom died, in an alleged attempt to discredit his colleagues.
Frédéric Péchier, a 53-year-old anesthetist, was convicted of committing the acts while working at two clinics in the eastern city of Besançon between 2008 and 2017.
The victims, who ranged in age from four to 89, suffered suspicious cardiac arrests during operations where they were otherwise considered low-risk.
One of the youngest survivors is four-year-old Teddy, who endured two cardiac arrests during a routine tonsil surgery in 2016.
Presiding judge Delphine Thibierge delivered the sentence, stating: “You will be incarcerated immediately.”
Péchier, who had remained free since the investigation began in 2017 and has consistently denied wrongdoing, appeared unmoved by the verdict.
