Damagum Chides Double-Dealing PDP Members, Describes ADC As Aberration

Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, has cautioned party members against maintaining dual political allegiances and urged them to renew their commitment to the PDP.

During a stakeholders’ meeting held on Wednesday in Abuja, Damagum openly criticized the opposition coalition African Democratic Party (ADC), branding it an “aberration.”

He said, “You cannot be in PDP and in coalition with another party. We cannot do this. If you are going, don’t market us. Most of you actualized your political aspirations through this party. We are telling you, come back. But if you must go, do so with clarity, not duplicity.

“You can’t belong to two parties at once. You are either with us, or you’re not. If you’re not, kindly leave and stop destabilizing our ranks.”

Damagum who expressed the confidence that the party will bounce back said it would no longer tolerate what he described as “double game politics.”

He admitted the party had suffered from self-inflicted wounds and internal indiscipline but insisted it still holds the moral and structural foundation to lead Nigeria out of its current economic and political woes.

“We have spent too much time trying to reconcile. Now, we must truly do it — and move forward,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, emphasized the need for the unity among members and urged them to be loyal to the party.

He said, “How is it smart to leave PDP, a party with history, structures, governors, and national presence, for a party with no offices?” Mohammed queried.

“Some of those leaving today were once accommodated, even after they caused our loss in 2015. We don’t want to insult them. But if you have to go, don’t disparage our party.”

The Bauchi governor called on party elders and defectors to return and help rebuild the party they helped establish, stressing that the PDP still represents the only credible national platform with a genuine commitment to good governance, inclusion, and democratic progress.

He also praised the efforts of PDP governors such as Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), and others for their impactful governance, which he said stands in sharp contrast to the failings of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

On the 2027 presidential ticket of the party, one of its founding fathers, Professor Jerry Gana has urged the PDP to nominate its presidential candidate from the southern part of the country.

Highlighting the need for national cohesion and electoral strategy, Gana strongly advocated for the party to field a presidential candidate from the southern region in the 2027 general elections. According to him, such a move would not only promote justice and equity but would also enhance the party’s electoral prospects.

“In tune with the patriotic wisdom of our founding fathers, we urge our leaders to support a power shift to the South. This strategy will not only secure victory at the polls but also restore faith in fairness and inclusivity,” he said.

“No more backroom deals or impositions. Delegates must be allowed to freely elect competent and loyal party leaders who will serve as the engine room for the PDP’s resurgence,” he said.

Reaffirming the party’s commitment to generational equity, Gana called for deliberate steps to mainstream youth and women into key leadership roles and candidate positions for the 2027 elections.

“The PDP must open its doors wider for brilliant, energetic, and innovative young Nigerians. Their ideas and digital fluency are critical for nation-building in the 21st century,” he noted.

Gana outlined the PDP’s legacy of achievements—including debt relief, economic growth, and the establishment of key national institutions such as the EFCC, ICPC, NHIS, and TETFund—as proof of the party’s capacity to govern.
