CSO Petitions UK Parliament Over Kemi Badenoch’s Remarks On Nigeria
The Foundation for Peace Professionals (PeacePro) has formally petitioned the UK Parliament and the Conservative Party, condemning recent comments made by Rt. Hon. Kemi Badenoch, a British Cabinet Minister of Nigerian descent, as false, harmful, and diplomatically irresponsible.
During an interview on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS, Badenoch claimed that Nigerian women cannot pass citizenship to their children—a statement PeacePro insists is factually incorrect.
Citing Chapter III, Section 25 of the Nigerian Constitution, the group emphasized that both men and women have equal rights to confer citizenship.
PeacePro’s Executive Director, Abdulrazaq Hamzat, argued that Badenoch’s remarks reflect a recurring pattern of disparaging commentary about Nigeria.
He noted that her public rhetoric, especially given her heritage, undermines Nigeria’s global image and risks damaging UK-Nigeria relations at a time when both nations are working to strengthen ties in trade, security, and education.
The petition calls for an internal review of Badenoch’s public statements, formal apology and correction, clear guidelines for UK officials on respectful international communication.
PeacePro warned that failure to act could normalise misinformation and erode diplomatic standards.
“Peace is rooted in truth. Diplomacy thrives on mutual respect. Falsehoods do not serve peace. Disrespect does not serve diplomacy,” the petition concluded.
