Constituents Beat, Slap Reps Member Over Alleged Non-Performance

A Zamfara State lawmaker, Kabiru Mikailu, was slapped and beaten to a stupor by an angry mob in Dansadau town on Wednesday for poor performance and neglect of the constituents.

The attack occurred during a historic visit by Governor Dauda Lawal, who was there to flag off the reconstruction of the 90-kilometre Dansadau–Gusau road.

Residents expressed deep frustration over what they described as the lawmaker’s “poor performance” and neglect of the community since his election.

They accused Mikailu, who represents the Maru South Constituency in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, of failing to visit the area or engage with constituents, even during major events like Sallah festivities and after repeated bandit attacks.

Videos from the scene showed the lawmaker being slapped, dragged to the ground, and manhandled by the crowd. Security operatives struggled to shield him as he was pulled in different directions. Chants of“bamayi” – a Hausa term signifying rejection – echoed as the crowd vented its anger.

Security personnel eventually overpowered the attackers, forced the visibly shaken lawmaker into a vehicle, and escorted him away.

During his visit, Governor Lawal also ordered the reconstruction of the town’s General Hospital and the provision of solar-powered electricity. He assured residents of his administration’s commitment to restoring security and rebuilding critical infrastructure across the state.
