Barcelona has withdrawn the captaincy armband from goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen due to ongoing disciplinary proceedings related to a dispute over his fitness status and refusal to share medical data with La Liga. This decision is described as temporary, and vice-captain Ronald Araujo has taken over as captain.
The conflict started because Ter Stegen underwent back surgery and declared he would be out for three months, but La Liga requires absence of at least four months to classify a player as long-term injured, which would allow Barcelona to reduce his salary on their wage bill and register new players. Ter Stegen refused to sign a medical release form allowing his injury data to be shared, complicating the club’s financial and registration plans.
The club states the removal is because Ter Stegen’s ongoing disciplinary case creates a conflict of interest with his leadership role, which demands commitment and responsibility, especially within the dressing room. The goalkeeper remains committed to recovery despite the situation.
