Banks increase SMS alert fees from today
Nigerian commercial banks have raised the fee for SMS transaction alerts from N4 to N6, effective from today.
The adjustment follows a recent increase in telecom service rates, which was approved by the federal government.
Banks informed customers of the change via messages sent early Wednesday, explaining that the fee hike was necessary due to revised telecom tariffs.
In an email notification, one bank stated: “Dear Valued Customer, please be informed that effective May 1, 2025, the SMS transaction alert fee will increase from N4 to N6 per message.
This adjustment is due to a recent increase in telecom rates as communicated by the telecommunication service providers.”
Additionally, banks noted that SMS alerts sent to international phone numbers would incur higher charges.
Customers who prefer to avoid the increased fees may have the option to switch to alternative notification methods, such as email alerts.
