Bandits Kill Six, Destroy Properties in Fresh Plateau Attack
The wave of violence sweeping through Plateau State intensified on Sunday night as gunmen launched yet another deadly assault on Ikn’gwakap village in Mushere Chiefdom, Bokkos Local Government Area, killing six people and razing several homes.
The attack, which began around 11:00 p.m., saw dozens of armed men storm the village, firing gunshots into the air before unleashing terror on sleeping residents.
Eyewitnesses who narrowly escaped described a two-hour rampage during which houses were torched, harvested crops destroyed, and food supplies looted.
The Mushere Youth Movement, in a statement signed by its national publicity secretary, Kutyil Gashion Nahum, confirmed the killings and lamented the continued absence of security intervention.
“Six innocent persons, including women and children, were brutally murdered in their sleep. Several others remain missing, leaving families in trauma and fear,” the statement read.
This latest tragedy adds to the staggering toll of insecurity in Plateau State, where over 2,630 people have been killed by bandits in the past year alone.
The region has become a flashpoint in Nigeria’s broader security crisis, with coordinated attacks, mass shootings, and arson devastating rural communities.
Despite repeated assaults on Mushere and surrounding areas, no arrests have been made, and perpetrators continue to operate with impunity. The youth group called for an urgent overhaul of the state’s security architecture and demanded accountability from both state and federal authorities.
“The silence and inaction of those in power have emboldened these terrorists,” the statement warned.
“The blood of our people must not continue to be shed in vain. The time for decisive action is now.”
Efforts to reach Plateau State Police spokesperson DSP Alfred Alabo were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
As the death toll rises and communities remain vulnerable, calls for justice and protection grow louder. For many in Plateau, the question remains: how many more must die before meaningful action is taken?
